Puja outline

  1. Decide before the day how you will keep the fast, and make it suit your health. In South India the Pournami fast traditionally runs from sunrise until the moon is sighted.
  2. Bathe early; many families take a holy dip or bathe with a little Ganga jal on Purnima.
  3. Worship Vishnu or keep a Satyanarayan puja if your family does; check its own date in your panchang.
  4. Read one complete text, such as Vishnu Sahasranamam, attentively.
  5. At moonrise, offer water (arghya) to the moon.
  6. Close with Om Jai Jagdish Hare or your family's aarti. Full steps: Aarti

Detailed guides

What is Purnima?

Purnima, also called Poornima, is the full-moon tithi that ends each Shukla paksha. In South India it is known as Pournami or Pournima, and the fast is called Pournami Vratam. Many of the year's major festivals fall on a Purnima, including Guru Purnima, Raksha Bandhan, Sharad Purnima and Kartik Purnima.

Why the fast can come a day early

Drik Panchang explains that the Purnima fast is kept on the previous day, Chaturdashi, only when Purnima begins during the midday (Madhyahna) period of that day. So the vrat day and the full-moon day are not always the same date. This page lists the vrat day. Drik Panchang also notes that Satyanarayan puja can be kept on the same day or a day before, and lists its dates separately, so check a Satyanarayan calendar if you keep that puja.

Fasting dates and publisher differences

All twelve 2027 monthly fasting days now have two-source support for New Delhi. For Shravana, Prokerala lists Purnima Vrat and Astrology Divine lists Purnima Upavas on 16 August; AstroSage and Astrology Divine also label 17 August Shravana Purnima Vrat. For Kartika, Prokerala's vrat and Astrology Divine's upavas fall on 13 November, while AstroSage calls 14 November Kartik Purnima Vrat. The following-day vrat labels are visible alternates, not silently reinterpreted. Full-moon festival dates do not automatically establish fasting days.

Ashwina 2026: two fasting calendars agree

For New Delhi, Drik Panchang and Prokerala list Purnima Vrat on 25 October 2026. Prokerala separately lists Purnima on 26 October. AstroSage labels 26 October as Ashwin Purnima Vrat, so that disagreement remains visible as an alternate; it is not silently relabelled as only a full-moon date. This is a sourced calendar choice, not a universal fasting rule.

How these dates were checked

Existing dates were checked on 29 September 2026 against Drik Panchang and AstroSage. On 2 October, Ashwina 2026 was checked against Drik Panchang and Prokerala; Shravana and Kartika 2027 were checked against Prokerala and Astrology Divine's New Delhi tables. Disagreeing vrat labels are retained as alternates. The fasting day can differ between cities, so check your family's location-specific panchang. No clock times are shown.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Purnima and Purnima vrat?

Purnima is the full-moon tithi. The Purnima fast is sometimes kept a day earlier, on Chaturdashi, when Purnima begins during the midday (Madhyahna) period of that day. This page lists the vrat days.

How many Purnimas are there in a year?

Usually twelve, one in each lunar month, and thirteen in a year with an extra (Adhik) month. 2026 had an Adhik Jyeshtha; no Adhik month is expected in 2027.

Is Satyanarayan puja done on Purnima?

Satyanarayan puja is traditionally kept on Purnima, but Drik Panchang notes that it can fall on the same day as the Purnima fast or a day before, so check its own date in your panchang.

Why do some Purnima dates show an alternate day?

Panchangs can distinguish the fasting or upavas observance from the full-moon day, but their vrat labels do not always agree. Each main date has two-source support for the fasting observance. Ashwina 2026, Shravana 2027 and Kartika 2027 preserve the following-day vrat labels as alternates. The Astrology Divine August table itself names upavas and Shravana Purnima Vrat on different days; follow your family's local panchang.

What should I read on Purnima?

Om Jai Jagdish Hare, Vishnu Sahasranamam, Om Jai Lakshmi Mata and Achyutashtakam are complete options on Valkala. Reading one text attentively is enough.
